The Mongolian Sky
The Mongolian Sky
As a child, I felt the sky within me. It made me feel boundless and everywhere at once. As a nomad girl, I loved sitting outside on my own at night. Well, not quite alone, but in the company of animals. There was a warm atmosphere amongst the animals. You know that animals in Mongolia sleep outdoors. I felt so safe that I would gaze up at the starry sky and talk to it until my mother had to call me in to bed.
The sky aroused my curiosity and gave me a sense of just how small a human being actually is. It taught me that I am boundless, yet at the same time, nothing. I learnt from it what generosity, love, support and infinity are, and so on. The sky contains everything; I could describe it as a book whose pages are the stars. I felt its support and guidance very strongly.
When I close my eyes, I become a sky full of stars. Every star twinkles within me and speaks to me. When I am faced with difficulties, I remember its words: “I’m still up there. Don’t worry. Until I’m up there, nothing bad will happen in the world.” I learnt this wisdom from the Mongolian sky. When I say this, people laugh and say: “There’s no such thing as a Mongolian sky – there’s only one sky, you naive soul.” I reply: “That may be so, but what have you learnt from the sky?” Most of the time, I get no reply. How skyless it is. They probably never had the chance to really get to know the sky.
If you want to speak to the sky and feel it within you, then get to know the Mongolian autumn sky. It is the best teacher. Then please be devoted and still, until your soul speaks. You will communicate silently.
